2. A Positive Development: Removing an Online Monopoly in Microsoft Software in Korea May Make Us More Secure on the Internet

3. Microsoft's XActive software monopoly on online encryption (banking/shopping) in Korea is slowly being demoted by two banks. Now instead of merely depending on Microsoft to fix itself, there will be market incentive that they will loose more institutional users. Greater competition in this sensitive area of online security I think is good. Some of the comments at the weblink argue that the introduction of the Apple IPhone as a competitor may have been another encouragement to be more "open platform" about online encryption instead of a willing servant of the Microsoft Corporation. I told the story in class that an anti-virus software corporation manager was fired for one day opining in the media that Microsoft's monopoly is a bad thing because that means viruses innately spread in any software monoculture--and Microsoft's virtual monopoly on the virtual experience of the web is partially responsible for widespread data insecurity.

Some examples of the commonly known data insecurity under a Microsoft XActive regime are detailed in the article.

[Korean] Online banking wiggles out of Microsoft chokehold

Woori Bank has been spearheading the ``open banking’’ movement, aimed at providing online banking services on computers that run on non-Microsoft operating systems like Linux and Apple’s Macintosh OS.

By Kim Tong-hyung

Microsoft had previously dominated the Korean computing experience and this had much to do with its virtual monopoly on Internet technologies used for encrypted communication like online banking and electronic commerce.

However, with local banks starting to allow their customers to move money online on non-Microsoft Web browsers like Firefox and Chrome, the country could be witnessing the beginning of the end of the Microsoft monoculture.

Spearheading the ``open banking’’ trend was Woori Bank, which expanded its online banking service beyond Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) browsers in July to support Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera users, who were also enabled to access the services from computers run on non-Microsoft operating systems like Linux and Apple’s Macintosh OS.

And it now appears that the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) is looking to tweak its online banking service to make it available on Linux and Apple computers too. IBK’s revamped Internet services will be accessible on a variety of browsers and will also support Microsoft’s latest IE 9. The bank will sign a company by October to redesign its Internet banking system.

Although IBK’s Internet services for desktop computers are designed for the Windows operating system and IE browsers, the bank has already been providing non-Microsoft online banking services on data-enabled mobile phones like the Apple iPhone.

``There have been complaints from computer users with non-IE browsers and our goal is to provide our Internet banking services to those with any browser,’’ said an IBK official.

Existing local regulations require all encrypted online communications to be based on electronic signatures that are enabled through public-key infrastructures. And since the fall of Netscape in the early 2000s, Microsoft's Active-X technology, used on its Internet Explorer (IE) Web browsers, remains the only plug-in tool used to download public-key certificates onto computers.

This prevented users of non-Microsoft browsers such as Firefox and Chrome from banking and purchasing products online. And [1] computer security experts have also claimed that public-key certificates don't add anything to security beyond a simple password gateway, which make them worse than useless as they create the illusion of safety where there is none.

[2] The private keys are mostly stored on unprotected memory such as hard disks or USBs, and could be duplicated easily by just copying and pasting the NPKI folder on the computers to other storage devices.

[3] The security provided by Active-X plug-ins is only active during the banking session, which means that the computers are left vulnerable most of the time. [4] And the mandated security requirements [of not having a choice of online encryption in Korea] are rendered completely irrelevant when the user's machine has already been compromised. This had discouraged users from moving beyond the aging computing experience based on the decade-old technologies of Windows XP and IE6.

The Korean reliance on Active-X became a hot topic again last year when a massive Internet attack left more than 80,000 Korean computers crippled. It was pointed out that Active-X provided an easy route for cyber criminals spreading malware for the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Pressured by the calls to provide more flexibility in Internet security technologies, the Korea Communication Commission (KCC) announced it would allow other verification methods besides public-key certificates for protecting encrypted communication, which motivated companies like Woori Bank to differentiate.

Woori Bank’s new Internet banking system appears to be well-received, with the bank garnering 40,000 new customers just a month into the changes.

And with a variety of banks, including IBK, Shinhan, Kookmin and SC First Bank, already providing non-Microsoft online banking services for smartphones, the transition toward an open Internet banking structure appears to be gaining pace.

Of course, the independence from the Microsoft-shaped past is far from complete. Woori Bank’s Macintosh customers are still forced to install public-key certificates and keyboard encryption programs on their laptops as banks have yet to agree on how to replace their old security technologies.

Aside of the security issues, usability is also a problem for Active-X plug-ins. A computer user will need to install at least nine Active-X controls to access the online banking services of three or more banks, according to a recent report.
Even Microsoft seems ready to bail on Active-X, as it looks to phase out the technology over security concerns and compatibility issues. This leads to awkwardness whenever Microsoft introduces a new product here.

The release of Windows Vista in 2007 caused massive disruption when the Active-X programs used by banks and online retail sites didn't function properly.

    2. U.S government will tap all smartphone & Facebook

    3. After 9.11, U.S goverment has always observed terrorist activities. But if terrorists plan criminal activities on web secretly?

Because of privacy, government will face difficulties. If government wanna protect U.S from terrors, ultimately government will have to tap various SNS all.

It's very unpleasant and not good. I think U.S government may as well tighten up security level on SNS. And as a warning for hacking, government will have to train speciallist.

Even though it may not our problem for the moment but in the long run, it's gonna be our problem. I think this problem will continue with development of internet communication system.

Now, internet grew into a huge monster.
And maybe we may lose control of that.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

U.S security officials are causing controversy because they are preparing a bill about tapping on web.

They said owing to increasing of internet communications, officials have trouble tracing various criminal activity. And for this reason they need a new bill.

However many people oppose a new bill with problem of privacy. NYT reported the White House and the Justice Department, FBI and NSC are in discussions with legalization of a new bill.(=legalization of tapping on web.)

Internet services which can send encrypted e-mail like smartphone or Facebook(SNS service) may observed. Also Skype which somebody can send mail to each other is observed too.

U.S government may introduce a bill which they tap messages if necessary at the beginning of next year.

Meanwhile they haven't reached conclusion about range of communication service enterprise.

    2. Hangul helps Korea build better relations

    3. Through this article, I thought that it is impossible if we don't live in information society. As we get into information society, nations which is so far from each other are close. This made Hangul can be a help for Indonesia, and it helps the better relationship between Korea and Indonesia.
    ----------------------------

Indonesians have been interested in learning about Korea and its language for some time. According to the Foreign Ministry, three universities in Indonesia run Korean studies and language programs.

The University of Indonesia, considered the most prestigious school there, became the first university in the country to open a four-year Korean studies program in August 2006. The Gadjah Mada University, which has the biggest student body in Indonesia, set up a four-year Korean language program in August 2007. Nasional University has been running a three-year diploma Korean language course since May 2005.

Elsewhere, the Hasanuddin University offers an elective Korean course and plans to open a full department in 2011.

Korea and Indonesia don’t boast a long history of relations. Their consular ties were set up in August 1966, according to the Foreign Ministry here, and Korea opened the consulate general in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, four months later.

The formal diplomatic relationship was established in September 1973. Korea and Indonesia have since enjoyed close relationships in energy and construction cooperation and in cultural exchanges. In 2007, the two countries agreed to a strategic partnership.

    2. The Internet the noble invention

    3. No doubt it is that the Internet has been made such a great change all over the world since its birth. The Internet now plays the important role in every fields and everyday life that is not just limited to correspondence with others but it delivers messages from countries where have a close censorship of using the Internet to worldwide; For example, an affair of bloodshedding in Iran several months ago and in China a year ago. Previously, What winners of a Noble prize for peace did was related to only a few countries, who won the prize for a great improvement in some areas, like Africa, however, effects of the Internet reaches across the world. I think the Internet deserves it.

4.The Internet Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

The Internet is in the running for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has confirmed. Championed by Wired magazine in Italy, the nomination has been backed by OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte.

Italian Wired suggests that the Internet (Internet) should receive the highly regarded prize for helping to advance “dialogue, debate and consensus.”

The nomination from Wired has been dismissed by some as a publicity stunt — and the support of long-time Wired columnist and investor Nicholas Negroponte is hardly surprising. Although currently seeing some success with the One Laptop Per Child program, Negroponte’s past projects have included such dubious endeavors as as Swatch Internet Time.

The award is to be given to the person (or organization) who has “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” The creators of the World Wide Web — Tim Berners-Lee, Larry Roberts and Vint Cerf — have been nominated, too.

The final nominations will be now be considered by the Committee with the winner due to be announced on October 8, while the awards ceremony will take place in December.

Do you think the Internet should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? Or should it go to a person or organization? Is Wired’s campaign just a PR stunt? Have your say in the comments below.

    2. Concern rise over smartphone security

    3.
Today, I want buy smartphone. Because, I want to get information immediately. But, after I read this article, I was hesitated to buy smartphone. According to this article, Smartphone has been found to be vulnerable to hacking. I think that a countermeasure is needed as soon as possible.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Alarms are ringing on the security flaws of smartphones that hackers could exploit to tamper with users’ personal data.
But experts say the gadgets are not much more vulnerable to intrusion than other computing devices. They may be secured through caution, and programs now used to protect personal computers and mobile devices.
A multitude of warnings on the safety of mobile operation systems from Apple and Google were issued last week by both government and private watchdogs.
German and French government agencies and computer security firms including Symantec reported that vulnerabilities in Apple’s software used in the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch could enable potential attackers to embed a malicious code through a specifically designed PDF file and to spy on users’ passwords, text messages, photos, schedules, e-mails and even tap phone conversations.

Most smartphones recently introduced, including Samsung’s Galaxy S are equipped with a protection program, Samsung said.
“Such security concerns have existed since the launch of smartphones,” said an official at Samsung Electronics who asked not to be named. “Customers don’t need to worry about it as long as they stay cautious in downloading files.
“I’ve certainly seen exploitations on the new mobile platforms which are expected to come more in the future, so users should keep away from suspicious files and perform a regular virus scan,” he said

Watchdog lashes out at Street View over privacy

By Shelley Huang / Staff Reporter

The Consumers’ Foundation yesterday accused Google of failing to block some license plates and faces on its Street View application, saying this infringed on people’s privacy.

Google Street View provides panoramic photographs of streets, buildings, cars and pedestrians, which users can navigate online. However, while in most photos license plates and individuals’ faces have been blurred out, in some street views, those can still be seen clearly, the consumer rights watchdog said yesterday.

The foundation tested the application last month by keying in various addresses in different parts of Taiwan and found that many street views failed to block out or blur parts of images that infringed upon people’s privacy.

A few months ago, an image of a woman who was not fully clothed and leaning out of a window was captured by Google Street View and was accessible to anyone who typed in the address of the building. Although Google later removed the photo, the controversy sparked criticism of Google’s practices and whether the Street View feature violated personal privacy.

Foundation vice chairperson Joann Su (蘇錦霞) said that although Google used artificial recognition software that automatically blurs out faces and license plates, in some cases the software failed to do so.

Caroline Hsu, head of communications at Google Taiwan and Hong Kong, said users can report any issues to Google Taiwan and that the company would review them and correct any controversial images as quickly as possible.

3.As we consume goods, there are many distribuion structures for obtaining the wares, which means that the price of the commodities is much higher than the prime cost because diverse people engaged in the structural industry participate in a current of articles for acquiring pecuniarily returns. Those multiple system of distribution has existed due to the limitation of space between consumers and producers, however, the appearance of the Internet alters the established scheme by being able to do directly mutual communication between customers and providers beyond the spatial restriction. In other word, the Internet as a revolutionary tool is quite efficient to change patrons' role from passive ones who do not have other choices without openig their wallets as merchants' demmands to active ones who can get something by connecting to initial providers with no aids of dealers' various parts. To sum up, contemporary people are able to procure something that they want with a reasonable cost; that is, their daily economic lives becomes effectual via material prosperity faced by reciprocally profitable commerce btween consumers and suppliers that is ultimately win-win game. 2. Crackdown on software piracy would create jobs

    3. For a long time, software, movies, music, culture and media were traded or illegally downloded in Korea society.
People felt that using download services without paying was natural phenomenon.
But people do not realize that paying for the those services is helpful for the economy.
    ------------------------------------------

BSA Korea estimates a 10 percent fall in piracy would increase software sales and jobs greatly.
    June 30, 2010
Korea has long been notorious for software piracy, with the rampant distribution of unlicensed films and music files, as well as computer programs and games.
But BSA Korea, the Business Software Alliance’s Korean branch, said yesterday that a 10 percent decline in software piracy could result in as much as a 50 percent increase in sales for the local software industry and create up to 88,000 new jobs.
Based in Washington, BSA represents the global software industry, with branches in 80 countries.
According to the report, which BSA Korea and the Software Property Rights Council commissioned from the Sogang Research Institute for Market Economy, a 10 percent decline in software piracy would result in increased sales of 10 to 50 percent for software firms and between 56,000 and 88,000 new jobs.
“This is the first such report in Korea that has delved into the effects of curbing software piracy in various digital businesses like film, music and publishing among others,” said David Kim, a public relations official for BSA Korea.
The report said reduced software piracy will increase demand for software, resulting in 6.4 trillion won ($5.3 billion) worth in added value for related goods and services.
“The protection of intellectual property is a must to trigger the creation of intellectual development in knowledge-based economies” said Jeon Seong-hun, an economics professor at Sogang University who spearheaded the study.
Last month, a joint study by BSA and Massachusetts IT research firm IDC, found that 41 percent of software installations in Korea last year were unlicensed, down from 43 percent in 2008.
It marked the first time that Korea fell below the global average, which stood at 43 percent, since the organizations began tracking such data in 1998.
BSA Korea is planning a campaign this year to raise public awareness about the issue.

Also, smartphone addicts search the internet using the smartphone when it happened they unknown despite there is person next to themselves. The smartphone addiction is more serious than the computer and internet addiction because it is possible to possess for 24 hours. This addiction leads to disconnection between people.

As smartphones rapidly emerge as a new medium of financial transactions, local banks are racing to adapt to the change -- some alone, and some together.

A group of 10 commercial banks said yesterday they are launching a unified mobile banking platform for Samsung Electronics’ smartphone model, the Omnia series.

Services will begin today at nine banks, while Citibank will launch the service tomorrow, officials said.

The lenders, many of them small in asset size and based in provinces, are jointly developing a platform for Apple’s iPhone and Android-based smart phones, as well. The group includes large institutions Woori Bank, Korea Exchange Bank and Citibank Korea.

The banking application for iPhones will be made available in May, while that for Android phones will come out in July, officials said. The start of the service may vary according to banks, they said.

“The development of a universal mobile banking platform for smartphones will benefit banks as well as customers, allowing the banks to deliver stable services to customers while avoiding redundant investment,” they said in an e-mailed press release.

    5. Twitter Under Tighter Scrutiny Before Election

Prosecutors are investigating a number of suspected unlawful political activities carried out through Twitter, Web portals and other online-based media ahead of the June 2 local elections.

After a meeting of 58 high-ranking prosecutors, presided over by Prosecutor General Kim Joon-gyu, Wednesday, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office announced that it will mobilize all possible resources to crack down on illegal election activities on the Internet, stressing it will impose steep financial penalties against gains earned through illegal election campaigns.

It also said prosecutors will make every effort to prevent unlawful rallies and politically-motivated industrial strikes that are aimed to influence election outcomes, adding it will prosecute those responsible for such unlawful activities.

“Elections should take place in a fair and neutral manner. Prosecutors should not take political considerations into account when investigating illicit campaign activities. Additionally, investigations should be conducted in a way not to influence political outcomes,” Kim said.

The prosecutors’ office has setup a “cyber crime monitoring team,” consisting of 36 investigators, to sniff out those who engage in unauthorized election campaigns on the Internet.

With a growing number of Koreans getting information online, politicians are increasingly turning to cyberspace to get their message out and rally support. However, law enforcement authorities are concerned that Twitter and other online tools may become a hotbed for illegal election campaigns.

In February, the National Election Commission (NEC) said it would prevent politicians and their supporters from using Twitter for promotional activities ahead of the elections.

But with the rising cases of possible illegal election activities in cyberspace as elections draw near, investigators have begun looking more closely into messages posted on online media sites and are ready to prosecute those responsible for spreading false rumors about certain candidates.

Prosecutors said a 51-year CEO of a shipping firm, only identified by his surname Lee, has been under questioning for posting several messages on Twitter, falsely claiming that a candidate he supports tops many public opinion polls. Twitter, which combines the strengths of blogs and instant messaging services, enables users to send and receive short messages on personal computers and mobile devices.

With many public officials running for mayor, governors and council members, 231 civil servants, including 61 incumbent heads of municipal governments, were booked. Of the 616, 330 were booked for giving and receiving money, while 43 were charged with the illegal promotion of certain candidates.

Most of those arrested in the US were charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and money laundering, a US Attorney said.

They are suspected of acting as go-betweens or mules by providing bank accounts for an elaborate cyber crime scheme.

Hackers in Eastern Europe would use spam email to infect computers of small businesses and individuals in the US with a virus known as Zeus, the FBI said in a statement.

The unnamed hackers were then able to to access users' online passwords and bank account details and used them to transfer money to the bank accounts provided by the go-betweens in the US.

The crime ring attempted to steal around $220m, the FBI added.

The arrests were the result of an international operation that kicked off in Omaha in May 2009 when FBI agents noticed a row of suspicious bank transactions.

Law enforcement agencies in the US, Ukraine, the Netherlands and the UK were also involved in the investigation.

Police in the UK arrested 19 people suspected members of the ring.

In Ukraine, police arrested five people suspected of directing the scheme, the FBI said.
