  1. 1. Major firms to invest in 'Silicon Valley of London' Huge graduate opportunity

    2.LEE Hak Rin

    3. Silicon Valley, in San Francisco in the U.S. But now even the UK is expected to consist of Silicon Valley. David Cameron, the British prime minister to create research parks in east London, is attracting global IT companies to invest. With regard to the relationship between culture and technology in Silicon Valley is important. This place has no bounds on time and place but also capital.

Korea society could be formed in the Silicon Valley? Everything is packed with a small territory in Seoul, such as Pangyo new town which has Samsung, NHN, NC soft, SK Thechnical, so that is expected to be formed in the vicinity. However, this is the government's plan, it still did not realize. Silicon Valley's innovative technology advances for the future of our society would be a good example.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

British Prime Minister David Cameron is to announce this afternoon plans to regenerate part of East London, the area where the 2012 Olympics will be held, into a rival to California’s Silicon Valley.
As University College London (UCL) is nearby, there are hopes that their students as well as those from the close-by British Library, and other London and nearby universities will jump at the opportunity to take on graduate jobs in the emerging UK technology market. This will allow graduates to fill some of the jobs left by the void of the spending review last week, which announced nearly half a million job cuts by 2015 in the public sector alone.

Google will create an ‘innovation hub’ creative space for its researchers to work with developers and academics, while Facebook will create a permanent home for its programme bringing together talented developers and entrepreneurs and Intel will set up a new research laboratory.
Cambridge also features as a focal point for emerging technologies, as businesses and student entrepreneurs often branch out from the university into private enterprise.
Not only will this be a chance for graduates to begin the difficult journey into employment post-recession and for businesses to invest in the local economy, but also an opportunity to adjust visa and immigrations request for the best and brightest foreign nationals, and to review intellectual property and copyright laws.

    2. Bookstores caught up in tablet wars
    3. Probably, there was no one who expected to replace display screen from papers, but now it's emerging. The electronic book explosion has been muted here, but optimists see tablet computers, like the Apple iPad, lighting a bigger torch. And traditional bookstores that napped during the debut of dedicated e-book readers are now rushing to develop e-book applications for mobile devices and have them installed in upcoming tablet devices. In my opinion, newspapers and books should be read by papers. I don't know why exactly, just believe like this.
    ------------------------------
LG Electronics, which has been late to the tablet party, is expected to unveil its first touch-screen computer next year, and it remains to be seen whether it will establish partnerships with book retailers the way Samsung did.

There are speculations that YoungPoong, Kyobo’s rival book retailer, could be picked as the applications provider for the new tablet, but LG Electronics officials said nothing has been decided yet.

YoungPoong was one of the book retailers and publishing companies that jointly established the Korea Electronic Publishing Hub last year to add to the wealth of e-book content available and create an ecosystem of applications. Bandi and Luni’s, YoungPoong’s rival book chain, and major online retailers Yes 24 and Aladdin, also have stakes in the Korea Electronic Publishing Hub.

``The demand for e-books will likely be centered around tablets. The dearth of e-book content continues to be a problem and we have to diversify our content sources to add to the overall pool,’’ said a YoungPoong official.

It remains to be seen which device will end up changing reading habits more ― tablets, referring to the all-purpose touch-screen computers like the iPad, or dedicated digital readers for books and newspapers like the Amazon Kindle. At least for Koreans, however, the answer seems obvious as they race to leap on the tablet bandwagon.

It was just earlier this year when electronics makers and Internet companies like iriver, InterPark, and Book Cube competed to push dedicated e-book readers out of the gate. However, industry observers say they have since combined to sell less than 50,000 of their products.

And although Samsung is promoting its Galaxy Tab heavily, the debut of the tablet doubled as a death sentence to Papyrus, Samsung’s first e-book reader that was just released in February. The sales of Papyrus have been disappointing, with consumers here turned off by the device’s lavish price tag and the lack of a content ecosystem, and Samsung says it now prefers to concentrate on tablets instead.

    2. SNS services focus on breaking news

    3. I watch internet news no every day morning. But sometimes when I overslept, I couldn't watch internet news. I don't have laptop or smartphone, so I can't watch news until after school. Frankly, I have a negative view on smartphone's internet service. Because this service very expensive, for this reason you can't serch various news freely and easily. So, I always think about 'how about receive daily or weekly hotissues by a flat rate?' If it comes true, you can watch core topic cheaply and there's no need to serch news on yourself.
On cellphone things in the old days this plan is not realistic. But today smartphone supply various SNS applications, so maybe you got short messages that they give primes of daily or weekly! (Ex. weather forecast , economic or politics issues etc)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rapid growth of smartphone apps is generating a variety of news channels for users, but there is one thing that is not complete yet: real-time alerts.
Although some of the iPhone and Android news apps have notification options, they stop short of letting the users to check the breaking news without missing their timeliness, partly because their notification systems are not fully developed.
The alternative is text message alerts that can serve not only smartphone users but also conventional phone users as the majority of today’s phones come with SMS (short message service) functionality. That is why a host of foreign news providers are offering SMS alerts while pushing for the development of mobile apps at the same time.

    [BBC]
BBC, for instance, touts its service by saying that “keeping up to date with breaking news while you're on the move is simple with the BBC News SMS alerts service.”
Those who want to use BBC News SMS alerts should register their mobile number and they can receive major national and international events as soon as they happen.
BBC sends about 12 messages per month, depending on events.
For further information, visit BBC SMS page:

    [Sky News]
Sky News, another well-known news outlet, provides similar SMS service. Sky promotes its service as a real-time channel for getting breaking news and weather updates. On average, Sky sends 1-2 messages per day, but this varies depending on the day's events.
For further information, visit Sky SMS page:

    [Herald Topic]
The Korea Herald also runs a similar yet slightly modified SMS news alerts called “Herald Topic,” targeting many Koreans interested in learning English as well as receiving the latest news on the go.
Herald Topic combines mobile news and English education. A complete English sentence summing up a hot news item is sent over the mobile phone network, with the Korean translation of a key word or expression included.
The Korea Herald sends real-time news two to three times a day over the mobile phone SMS network and also provides breaking news regardless of the service timeline.
For further information, visit Herald Topic subscription page:

    2. Twitter's time
    3. Many people ask me, "what are you doing in dorm?" I sleep or do computer mostly. There is no special thing by internet. I usually do shopping or Nateon. Lately I also do twitter and more and more. Interesting of shopping is decreased. At first, I don't know why people do twitter. But I sink into it. The reasons are I can communicate with others using it and get some pride that I keep pace with changes in society.
    -------------------------------------------
    4. The time using SNS like twitter and facebook is increasing. So it is twice more than web-surfing. Recently, the world internet users are surveyed.
The study shows that 6 of 10 people have SNS account, the number of personal connections is 54 people and use SNS during 4.6 hours per week. While, web-surfing is 2.3 hours per week.

As I read this article, I agree with this study. Because I also sink into twitter! The spotlight days about SNS like twitter and facebook are not old. But it is already of great importance! It's surprising!

    2. 'Cyber terror' goes wild
    3.
Today, Korea has a big problem that is called 'witch hunt' in cyberspace. First, Internet users chose a target. and then they attack the target by spreading personal information of the target. Sometimes, cyber terror drive victim to commit suicide. of course, aggressive internet users often expose the corruption of society. however, cyber terror as witch hunt is very dangerous. Cyber terror can incalculable damage to victims and their family. Internet can be a two-edged sword. I think that We need to educate children from early on the proper usage of internet.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
Some netizens are waging a “cyber terror” campaign against a 35-year-old female middle-school teacher found to have had an inappropriate relationship with a pupil by spreading photos of her and other private information in cyberspace.

Experts are referring to it as a “witch hunt,” which could destroy the life of the victim, as well as those of her family members, and are urging Internet users to refrain from “reckless” cyber bashing. They also warn that those spreading personal information of others could face criminal charges.

Since media outlets broke the news Monday that the female teacher, who is married and has three children, allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old student in her car in an underground parking lot last week, some netizens began using information from her personal homepage to disparage her.

They copied her photos, the name of her workplace, family background and other information, and uploaded them onto Internet community sites, such as DC Inside (www.dcinside.com) and Netizen Crime Scene Investigators (www.nsiclub.com).

Netizens also posted the photos and other personal data of the indecent teacher on their websites and blogs, enabling a larger number of Internet users to view her private information.

“Such cyber terror cannot be justified under any circumstances, even if someone did something wrong. Digging for the personal information of people for defamation and spreading it in cyberspace has become a ‘fun’ game for many young netizens. I think it is possible because they do such things behind a veil of anonymity,” a university professor in Seoul said.

    2. Violence and Revolt (Do violence make ppl going to mad?)
    3. Last week, I wrote about Nintendo Wii Boxing game for the other class term-paper. I supported the game for sort of 'identification' and 'catharsis'.
First, Wii is played by motion capture system that the avatar act same as player. This systematic reason, performer feel a strong identification than other game consoles with joystick. Second, most of all, The player who play Wii Boxing feel catharsis through not real punch, but do motion of punching the other. I believe it makes a reducing of violence.
Some ppl, like who buzz with realistic blood colour, think a video game with violence make ppl going mad. It's superficial thought. Many of problem cause not only becauce of violent video game but also because of social system which make a weak person disappointed.
I, surely, do agree with a ban on selling to under the age of whatever. I do not agree with noising buzz about head explode.

Gears Of War boss defends violence

The creator of the successful Xbox video games series Gears of War has defended the use of violence in his video games.

Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer at Epic Games, argues that brutality is depicted with an element of fantasy.

The third person shooter revolves around the efforts of soldier Marcus Fenix as he helps combat a race of aliens on the planet of Sera.

"When we create our games we use a slapstick type of violence, we poke each other in the eyes and hit each other with frying pans like the old Warner Brothers cartoons," he told The Interview on the BBC World Service

"It's funny because the industry sometimes comes under fire from watchdog groups with regard to this sort of violence.

"But we always believe that when we first see this muscular space marine beating down a lizard man and heads explode with water melon guts spewing out of them, you're morally inclined to smile and giggle rather than be revolted."

His comments come during a week when a case was held in the US Supreme Court over whether children should be stopped from buying violent video games.

The case centres on a ban in California on selling or renting games to those under the age of 18.

Opponents claim it breaches the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech but supporters argue the law is necessary as violent games can cause harm to children.

But Bleszinski pointed out that the level of violence in their video games is carefully monitored and vetted.

"We have an internal moral compass where we will decide, 'No that's a little bit too much,' or we need to cut the violence back a little bit," he explained.

"So there's still ways of showing violence to an affecting user without showing too much."

    Inspired series

Rather than encouraging brutality in video games, the Gears of War creator believes the series focuses more on creating an interactive world for the user.

"The majority of what we implement into the game we do for feedback and interactivity, not because we're strange sadistic people who want to see how much blood we can put on the screen when you shoot one of the lizard creatures.

"We do it to let the player know you did in fact succeed, that you are hitting a target and you need that kind of feedback in order to create what is a successful interactive experience."

The Gears of War trilogy, part three of which is out in April 2011, is a hugely successful franchise with the first part alone scoring sales of three million within 10 weeks of its release in 2006.

    2. LG Uplus forms tie-up with Facebook
    3. LG U plus and Facebook agree on to cooperate further more services for costomers. Even LG U plus will provide customers with its smartphone for free! (Although It’s service is untill April next year.) I think this strategy may be imposition to people on using smartphone. It seems to tell “Use this smartphone, And you can come into the digital world, Or you will fall behind others!” Several days ago, I saw the TV entertain Show, “Nam-Ja ui Ja-Kyeok” in Korea, It means ‘Man’s right’.
The contents of that day is about that OB and YB compete their ability to use digital methods. OB were complexed and didn’t use digital thing such as internet, DSLR camera, smartphone etc. But YB easily and quickly succeed. They weren’t wandering.
I think world is more approach at digital world, the disabled (not to use digital things) is more generated. It should not force people to use digital things. People should always have the right to choose whether they use them or not.
    4. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LG Uplus and global social networking giant Facebook signed an agreement Wednesday to cooperate further on developing mobile services, aiming to strengthen communication for customers.

In a press conference in downtown Seoul, LG Uplus said it will offer customers its smartphone and feature phone subscribers the use of the Facebook mobile application for free until April next year.

“We will enable our customers to use the social networking service without having them spend any of their data distributed accordingly to the monthly payment plan for the following six months,” said Kim Cheol-soo, executive vice president of convergence project team at LG Uplus.

Kim Cheol-soo, executive vice president of the convergence project team at LG Uplus (left), and Alison Rosenthal, head of mobile business development at Facebook, hold up smartphones after signing an agreement to cooperate on mobile service in downtown Seoul on Wednesday.

LG Uplus’ feature phone users will also be able to write messages on Facebook by sending them to #2665. They will automatically receive any messages sent to them on Facebook through text messages.

“We’re very excited to be bringing these core mobile products, giving access to the mobile social web with LG Uplus,” said Alison Rosenthal, head of mobile business development at Facebook.

This is the first time Facebook has formed a partnership with a local mobile carrier. KT offered the social networking service for its feature phone users before, but had yet to sign an agreement with the U.S. company.

“We’ve created the partnership by having a joint taskforce work together for the past three months,” said Kim. “We’re planning to provide an array of services in the near future by establishing a joint team between the two companies.”

2.Latest IT trends involve ‘smart,’ social services
    3. The most important strength of smartphone is of course, "mobility". We can check everything through smartphone. Nowadays, we can check social networking service, weather, internet news, etc through smartphone. This article said that from now on, smartphone can become more "smart"!
It said that the smartphone boom has created a "mobile tsunami" of new technologies that provide services on a portable, real-time basis.
So maybe in the future, almost people use smartphone, and can control everything through smartphone. Even automobile! It sounds really awsome. But this one is one of the weakness as well. Although smartphone give us "mobility". Someday we cant live without smartphone.

    -------------------------------
In the world of fashion, what’s hip today could find itself on the clearance rack tomorrow.

The same concept also holds true in the IT industry, where new products and services can rise to prominence quickly but fall out of favor, literally overnight, as new technologies hit the market.

So what about the next wave of trends in the IT industry? It will involve a few key buzzwords including “smart,” “cloud,” “social,” “open” and “hybrid,” according to Samsung SDS, which released, yesterday, a list of emerging technologies to watch in 2011.

“The smartphone boom will really hit its stride next year,” Park Seung-an, chief technology officer and executive vice president of the company’s technology division, said yesterday at a press conference in Seoul.

“With the number of smartphone users in Korea expected to reach 4 million by the end of this year, we’re seeing the technology expand quickly and spill over into other products aside from phones like televisions, refrigerators and automobiles,” he said.

Industry insiders say the smartphone boom has created a “mobile tsunami” of new technologies that provide services on a portable, real-time basis.

This trend has revamped interest in cloud computing, which has been around for more than a decade but is just now gaining prominence, according to Samsung SDS, which is one of Korea’s leading information technology communication companies. In cloud computing, data and software are stored on a server rather than on an individual computer, meaning users can easily access their information from any device with an Internet connection. Companies like NHN - Korea’s top Web portal operator - and KT, the country’s dominant fixed-line operator, have jumped into this area of the IT industry by introducing new services and products.

Another big trend in the IT world revolves around social networking and related technology as Facebook and Twitter expand into the realms of gaming, commerce and marketing, according to Samsung SDS.

“A combination of cutting-edge equipment, IT and services will enable users to immerse themselves in experiences that have existed only in science fiction novels,” the report said.

These networks will allow both individuals and businesses to make decisions quicker by providing through real-time information sharing and collaboration, according to the report.

2.IT will converge into single device by 2020: futurist
    3. Nowadays, We can't live without smartphone. We use smartphone like a laptop. But It has obstacle of course. Smartphone cant be like a laptop obviously. And also It has limitation. This article said that, in the future "e-bag" will emerge. We can do everything through e-bag, maybe. I can't wait. 3D monitor will be awsome!
When I read this article, I thought, industry is developed really fast. I cant imagine even next stuff of future. We can control everything even automobile, home stuffs, or etc. I cant wait already.

    ----------------------

Danish futurist Rolf Jensen predicted that information technology devices will be integrated into a single gadget, which he calls an “e-bag,” in the next 10 years.

“The e-bag will merge the functions of all existing smart devices like laptop computers, tablet personal computers, smartphones and (digital) cameras,” Jensen said in a lecture on the sidelines of the Smart Korea 2010 trade show at Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, last week.

“It’s (going to be) your everything ID, passport, bank and key a companion in your life that is probably more important than your spouse.”

From consuming news and entertainment to education and social media, the e-bag will enable people to do almost any task he said.

For instance, Jensen said children will learn more by utilizing IT devices rather than from teachers, which enhance their imagination by fusing education with playing.

Also, more globalized and versatile consumption of news and entertainment will become available thanks to the increased number of media and channels which will be realized by automated real-time translation services, Jensen said.

“Such change will bring democratization particularly to the entertainment industry, enabling anyone with talent to produce contents such as films, music and games at a small cost,” he said.
He noted that 10 years is a long time in the IT industry, mentioning the fact that in 2000s no one knew people were going to have smartphones and flat screens now.

“Thus to look 10 years ahead to 2020, we need to be creative and make good use of our imagination at companies and governments,” he said.

To achieve creativity, Jensen said firms should first set a “clear and simple” goal while being driven by values rather than responsibilities.

The futurist also pointed out that humans resist change by nature, but firms in the future will be more required to make changes to adapt to the ever-changing business environment.

Jensen called for the need of more “teenager companies,” which, just like humans, act more aggressively and creatively. He added that older and bigger firms tend to be less daring and cautious.

Jensen presented the concept of “3-D printers” as a means to encourage establishments of teenager firms.

He described 3-D printers as a “true revolution” with which people can produce any product, and expected that they will first be adopted for industrial use but come to the home in around five years with their price coming down as well.

Since such attributes enable anyone to run a business just by owning it as a tool, Jensen expected that more teenage businesses will emerge. The firms will eventually form a system of “crowd-sourcing,” where they compete and collaborate, he added.

    2. Crisis of copyright

    3. Through the Internet, you can get information easily. But the copyright about information receive threats. You can search other people's information easily. Also you can easily copy this information a single click. Music, movie and drama are unprotected and downloaded illegally through the P2P(peer-to-peer network) program. Computer users don't know that this download is illegal. This is problem. As the information get easily, copyright of information is more crises.

    ---------------------------------------------

Prosecutors and police are considering charging 80 Internet users with violating copyrights by illegally downloading movie files from file sharing Web sites.

Police have probed a peer-to-peer (P2P) program operator based in Seoul after securing the identities of 80 users by combing their log-in records since last month.

``Currently, 57 users have been summoned and questioned by prosecutors and the remainder are being traced,’’ a police officer said.

Their investigation came after Media Film International (MFI), a film copyright holder for ``Lord of War,’’ _ an action adventure story set in the world of international arms dealing _ which was released last year, lodged a complaint against the perpetrators for copyright infringement.

Under the current copyright protection law, the law enforcement authorities are allowed to investigate and punish individuals or companies that distribute content without authorization, only when the copyright holders file a complaint.

Their action came amid recent moves by the film industry and relevant portal sites, which will introduce a so-called ``youngparazzi,’’ paparazzi who catch illegal movie downloaders who share and distribute film files via the Internet.

Law enforcement agencies will soon decide the fate of the 80 users after finalizing the investigation.

However, prosecutors have not yet decided whether or not they will charge all of the perpetrators with the same weight because most of them are under-aged middle and high school students.

Investigators are also considering whether or not to set the guidelines for movie file downloading in accordance with music file downloading.

Prosecutors are planning to introduce relevant guidelines for coping with complaints of illegal movie file downloading.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office set the guidelines for accusing those who violate copyright laws via the Internet in January.

Under the guidelines, Internet users who are sued for illegally circulating and swapping music files for commercial purposes will be subject to criminal charges.

    2. Another planet Google

    3. Google earns amounts of billion dollars a year for several years. What is amazing is that Google founded the company only 13 years ago. Its history is very short but it now became world's biggest company. And Google expands its business to various fields including unmanned vehicles, energy saving, education, protecting environment, etc. Google first commenced a business only for IT but now which dominates a lot of industries, even they have effects on military. I like Google and use lots of its service but sometimes I'm really worried its ambitious. they look like constructing their own planet, and we can't live without this planet a single day. Now it's time to show up a strong competitor.

    -----------------
    4. Ladies and gentlemen, Google has officially announced a new revolution that is going to completely transform the cars as we see them today. Google has been testing unmanned vehicles in the streets of California over months which have already logged 1,40,000 miles. The cars run fully automated and run on the road using sensors and actuators. Yes people, a new revolution has already begun and we at ICB will closely follow every bit of it.

Ford, General motors, Toyota are the biggies in this field but are we witnessing the start of a big change in this scenario? Today the information on the internet is controlled by Google, we Google every other thing we need, be it a very small consumer commodity like soap or a high-fi science technology Google is there to tell us about it. The next big google leap would be into cars and that too not something common, a hi-fi science fiction type car which will drive itself on its own while you will be sitting having breakfast, or reading newspaper or on a regular business.

    2. New trend in Internet-age publishing

    3. I still love the smell of old books from libraries, but now the rise of digital books and online retailing was upending book publishing‘s business model. Because publishers facing higher costs and less revenue were signing fewer authors and bookstores were vanishing. I can read books on any device, anywhere, all the time, through the world is changing and authors have to find ways to eat.

    -----------

NEW YORK -- About a year ago, Mary Ann Naples had a holy-cow moment. If she‘d been a cartoon character, she would have smacked her forehead until stars came out.

She was standing atop an escalator at Book Expo America, the publishing world’s spring jamboree in New York, surveying a convention hall of sullen faces. Many of the 30,000 booksellers, publishers, authors and agents were looking like well-heeled passengers on a leaky cruise ship.

The rise of digital books and online retailing was upending book publishing‘s business model. Publishers facing higher costs and less revenue were signing fewer authors; advances and royalties were declining; and bookstores were vanishing, leaving big American cities such as Laredo, Texas, without a single one.

And not least among the sky-is-falling signs, it was tougher to persuade a book editor, here in America’s publishing capital, to buy lunch, never mind underwrite a book party for an established author.

Although everyone agrees stories need to be told and distributed -- most still through words in the form of sentences that make paragraphs that make chapters -- the industry remains uncertain about future ways to turn a profit.

Naples‘ escalator epiphany was that authors couldn’t rely on publishers and agents to sort out the future. They had to harness the Internet on their own, to find new ways not only to draw audiences but also to keep them, and make money at it too. She‘d observed how musicians were sidestepping the major labels by using online tools to connect with and sell their music directly to fans.

“There’s something through direct selling that can make a difference in an author‘s career,” she remembered thinking that day.
