Week 1: Opening Thread: Post your Blog Entries as Comments to my Main Post Each Week

Post Comments like this:

1. Your Name
2. A Title
3. A short personal commentary what you learned from it or what made you curious about it given the week's class content. However, it doesn't have to be about the week's content, only something related to human-environmental interactions.
4. Then put a long line ('-------------------)'.
5. Then cut/paste A SMALL PART of the article or topic you found. (This is because blogger.com now has a limit of "4096 characters" in blog comments. However, that should be enough to concentrate on your own comments, and provide an excerpt and a link to the original article. If you do want more space, and I encourage it, post a second time to get another "4096 characters".)
6. Then a small line '---'.
7. Then, finally, paste the URL (link) of the post.

Post for the first week on this thread. I'll set up a new main post each week, and then we will do the same.

    2. Development of computer technology

    3. In the past, it is difficult to make foreign friends because of limitation of time and space. But as the information society it is possible to make foreign friends easily. In addition to using mail, using Internet chat room is able to conversation with foreign friends.

Development of computer technology have brought the convenience. But this made it easier for the leaking of personal information.

    2. sensitivity + ICT(information&communication technology)

    3. What i learned from this news is there is no limitation in the technology. In the past, we can only use this technology to make human life easy. But these day, scientists attempt to combine people's sensitivity with ICT. It is amazing technology can be used in the part of human's sensitivity. Technical development means it makes human world easy. So I think it is good. But It also means machine can dominate people's unique part. People can be controlled by machine like 'MINORITY REPORT'. Think as if our feelings are controlled by machine. What a terrible thing!

    ------------------------------------------
Emotional ICT is the technology combining human's sensitivity and emotion information with a smart phone and so on. For example, it read user's brain wave, language, habit and etc. After that, understand user's feeling and next control machine's function.
The people concerned told emotional ICT is the point in the future IT market as we saw from the 'apple iphone' and 'nintendo wii'.

I'm amazed that people exchange weather information so quickly by twiter.I think SNS(Social Network Service) twiter is a slice of information society.

    ---------------------------------------

For a few days, people too busy sharing too many weather information.(Like interruption of train service or traffic jam by typhoon)
Some public institution take advantage of twiter.KORAIL announced that train service has been suspended because of typhoon by twiter.
One expert said that twiter is network for modern people which share information so quickly. Also,he warned a some virus which spreaded by twiter.

    3. I'm not interested in celebrity's academic degrees. I think the more internet developes, the more information grows up. Many people can get information about anything they wnat. But as we can get information, there are manners we have to keep.

    ------------
Korean Internet users refuse to let go of their doubts about Korean hip-hop singer Tablo’s academic degrees, even after over half a year has passed since questions were raised and the singer has produced proof of his achievements and his former classmates rallied around him.

The situation has only gotten worse after Tablo and netizens have recently opted to take legal action; Tablo filed a lawsuit in mid-August against 22 netizens for defamation while members of two Internet clubs filed charges against the singer, of which one was made yesterday, for illegal fabrication of certifications.

3.Written by looking at the article I was terrified. Now days, Comments in the past, wandering the Internet, and the signs to look for employment and admissions personal reputation is used as a key tool. "When young people become adults 'digital past,' to escape from all the names might change. Google's chief executive officer (CEO) Eric syumiteun said Tuesday in an interview The Wall Street Journal with a serious tone. Our privacy Is now being lost? Because of privacy issues and Social Networks.

    --------------------------------------

Companies such as Google, Live Search with a focus on the exploitative, in a digital world, individuals 'privacy' is disappearing at a rapid pace. A headhunting company official said, "of headhunting and reputation management and all the subjects against the Internet search and through a Google search will get a lot of personal information," he said. Therefore, young people use the Internet to be more cautious.

2.Navigating the sea of smartphone apps

3.Nowadays, We can see smartphone users everywhere. They said that they cant live withouth smartphone. Now, information is really important to our life. And people want to check their information (like blog, e-mail ..etc) even they are on subway. Many apps appears for smart phone users, And They use very usefully. I dont have smartphone, but i will buy soon. I heard many smart phone users have their world on their smartphone world. They share some information through smartphone apps. Society changes quickly now. And We can use internet, and information through our phone!! I think it is really fantastic.

    -----------------------------------

In simpler times, before smartphones became ever-present, commenting on the weather was a perfectly normal way to strike up a conversation. But these days, it seems that those inducted into the mobile cult have a new verbal handshake: “Have you tried this new app?”

With the number of smartphone users here surging, it seems everyone has an opinion on the best and worst applications for these amazing new devices.

At first glance, the sheer variety of smartphone apps is stunning.

“When the iPhone launched in Korea last year, I was terribly skeptical of its real practicality and about whether one really needed a smartphone. I thought it was just a gadget for show-off Apple otaku,” said Jeong Wu-yeong, a feature writer for GQ Korea, using a Japanese term for an obsessed nerd.

But now, Jeong is a proud convert. Citing a handful of apps that he says he uses daily on his iPhone, including some for quick article translations, storage and games, he says that his phone has made his life much easier.

    2. Smart phone user, Your personal information is in danger!

    3. In information society, there are many technologies and devices that makes easy to acess information. Smart phone and application in this phone can be an example. It is very useful. But it can leak your personal information too! Now I am planning to buy smart phone as soon as possible. Before buying and using smart phone, We should know danger of leak of personal information through it. And we always have to pay attention to protection of our personal information.

    --------------------------

Galaxy S by Samsung, which adopted open operating system can leak personal information to others through application programs.

These kind of malignant application programs cannot deleted once these are downloaded. And it has no sign when it is in execution. So users cannot recognize it at all.

In addition, everyone can make malignant application programs easily.

    3. Even though the informationalisation does not guarantee people's ultimate happiness, it is undeniable that freedom as natural right becomes scattered by this trend. One's opinion could avoid a gag based upon gonvernmental authority through the Internet: the vast ocean of information. However, N.Korean regime tries to deter the spreading of freedom through their political powers which was only possible in feudalistic world.

According to Radio Free Asia, The last bamboo curtain decided to control N.Koreans who watch S.Korean T.V and having mobile phones through equipments from China. In addition the "130 Sangmoo" which has been established for protecting their socialistic culture from capitalistic world searches peopels' houses without any warrants.

    3. Many people are familiar with the wireless Internet. Sometimes, I also use internet to do homework in the coffee shop. I think the best thing about the wireless Internet is that it's available anytime, anywhere. And these days, people use Web-capable cellular phones. Many cities nationwide are installing free wireless Internet networks in public areas. Thanks to advanced technology, our lives become much more convenient.

    -----------------------------

KT Corp., the country’s largest fixed-line operator, said Monday it will establish wireless Internet networks in most major subway stations across the nation by the end of this month.

The telecom firm has so far constructed the Wi-Fi networks in 84 subway stations which are used as transfer stations in Seoul as well as the metropolitan regions, and 22 other stations, according to its officials.

    2. SNS(Social Network Service) for one-way communication.

    3. Thanks to widespread mobile devices and the Internet, people in the modern era tend to communicate with others through SNS; twitter, facebook, etc. However, it is not symmetric communication at all. When it comes to twitter, according to the study where shows there is about 10% gap between follower and following in both men and women. Even worse when we see celebrities twitter, they are followed by over thousands of people but only follow others few, 50 at many. Since the situation like this, I doubt whether these are authentic 'Social Network'. As all we know, communication should be based upon listening and speaking but on what my opinion is that it cannot be defined as communication tools. it is just a tool of business marketing or observing how others live. I think the law of 'the rich get richer and the poor get poorer' is applied on the Internet.

    -----------------------

    4. Twitter has attracted tremendous attention from the media and celebrities, but there is much uncertainty about Twitter's purpose. Is Twitter a communications service for friends and groups, a means of expressing yourself freely, or simply a marketing tool? Of our sample (300,542 users, collected in May 2009), 80% are followed by or follow at least one user. By comparison, only 60 to 65% of other online social networks' members had at least one friend (when these networks were at a similar level of development). This suggests that actual users (as opposed to the media at large) understand how Twitter works.

    3. I'm sick of SNS. From more than 2 years before, I started to heard about SNS. I perfectly understand that SNS is the most powerful tool in the most recent.
However, It's absolutely waste of time that SNS(especially twitter) without a "smart phone" In matter of fact, I don't have one. So I feel glad to hear one of SNS closed down and feel warry about some of user who used that service will move to twitter at the same time.

    2. Education critical in fighting cyber crimes

    3. The number of cyber crimes, such as hacking and virus, has increased. It probably occurs to people or companies that seldom have preventing system against that. So, This news stress that in order to protecting cyber crimes, private efforts-equipment with security system-is very important. and I agree.
    --------------------------------------------
Educating users so that they know what kind of cyber threats they are exposed to on a daily basis is among the challenges that governments face as the world becomes increasingly wired.

After all, individuals who unknowingly become targets may in the end put entire communities and corporations in trouble, which is why everyone needs to practice good security

2.School children to receive monitoring devices

    3. Nowadays, many crimes have increased. Especially, child crime. So, goverment distribute Id card some elementary school.
I think it is good method. Actually, i also used like this ID card. When i was in middle school, high school in hakwon(institute). It used to just confirm student's attendence. We checked Id card, and then automatically text message to our parents. At this time I thought it was silly, and feel forced. But, Nowadays Many childeren should be careful everywhere. So i really agree this system. But,have a problem too. If someone lose their Id card, of course some of crimimal would use badly, like voice phishing. Although i agree this system.

U-Seoul Children Safety Zone designates areas within a radius of 300 to 500 meters (0.2-0.3 miles) from schools as “child safety zones” and requires the installation of closed-circuit televisions and related reader-sensors in designated areas.

The devices will signal the location of children via tags attached to children’s bag or worn as bracelets or necklaces. Parents receive information via cell phones through text messages. In case of an emergency, children can press the bell attached to the tag to get a quick response.

The service was already tried in a pilot project last November at two elementary schools in Guro and Dobong Districts in southwestern and northern Seoul, respectively, the Seoul city government official said.

No criminal cases have so far been reported in those areas and the service has received positive responses.

    2. Students stay connected with parents
    3. College students being away from their parents can contact with many technology strategy like text messages or online chat. It is different scene from past. which is caused by technology improvement. it will increase number of cases that technological ways contribute human's life.
Sometimes, some experts are concerned about dependency of teenagers to their parents or weak self-esteem that may be brought about by frequent contact between them. But I think that people who are able to lean on are very important for college student in long distance from their home.
    ------------------------------------------------
CHICAGO -- Nineteen-year-old Taylor Matichak calls her mom several times a day, in between the flurry of text messages they send one another discussing academics, social life or just daily chit-chat.

Though the sophomore at the University of Missouri in Columbia spends most of the year more than 300 miles from her family‘s Plainfield, Illinois, home, the distance seems to evaporate with technology.

“I like it because we can stay close,” said the teen, who says she initiates most of the calls and texts.

It’s profoundly different from the college days of her mother, 52-year-old Debbie Matichak, who remembers waiting in long lines at her dormitory pay phone to make the obligatory Sunday collect call home.

Keeping in touch with parents was more expensive and time-consuming when she attended the University of Denver three decades ago. But as college students prepare to descend on campuses in the coming weeks, many are finding that with the ease of cell phones, unlimited text message plans, e-mail, Facebook, and Skype, they can have near-constant access to mom and dad.

“It‘s changed the experience of being away at college,” said James Boyle, president of College Parents of America, based in Arlington, Va. “A generation ago, when your parents said goodbye and drove away, many (students) didn’t see their parents again until Thanksgiving.”

But some experts fear this communication shift could hamper the independence of older teens at a time when they traditionally come into their own.

“Sometimes these students are not being as autonomous or self-sufficient as they should be,” said Barbara Hofer, psychology professor at Middlebury College in Vermont and co-author of the book “The iConnected Parent: Staying Close to Your Kids in College (and Beyond) While Letting Them Grow Up,” which is being released this month.
“Staying close is different than being dependent,” she said.

Her 2008 study of students at Middlebury and the University of Michigan found that students on average contacted their parents 13 times a week, mainly via cell phone calls and emails, though text messaging and Skype seem to be growing in popularity.

Another problem dips into academic dishonesty: Hofer said one in five students reported having their parents edit their papers online, a practice that might violate the honor codes of many colleges and universities. While helping a child with a paper at the kitchen table in junior high or high school might be appropriate, sending a paper back and forth for editing can amount to the parent doing all the work, which means the student isn’t learning to do it alone, Hofer said.

    2.Teen ‘haulers’ become a force
3.Nowadays, many people want to appeal themselves on the internet. For example, Youtube.
Many people updates their trival matter.
Some people updates their song..some people updates their family picture..etc.
Genre is really difference. And Here, in US, teen girls sell product through youtube.
I think it is really good idea. I really like on-line shopping. But, It is really hard to check product exactly. She put them on, and show through monitor. We can buy everything from internet also. But This marketing is really good idea.

    ----------------------------

LOS ANGELES -- When 14-year-old Bethany Mota gets back from the mall, she eagerly models her latest finds to friends and family.

And to tens of thousands more on YouTube.

The rising high school sophomore from Los Banos, California, is a “hauler,” a term for tech-savvy young fashionistas who show off their purchases, or hauls, in homemade videos that they post online. Bethany started hauling about a year ago and now has more than 48,000 YouTube subscribers who tune in to watch her show off her favorite back-to-school outfits (“you don‘t want to wear heels and stuff, obviously”), big-volume mascara (“this is like my new obsession”) and perfumes (“summer in a bottle right here!”).

“You get to connect with girls around the world, and that’s what reeled me in,” said the doe-eyed, fresh-faced teen, who could pass for Kim Kardashian‘s younger sister. “YouTube videos, they’re more personal and more real than a commercial on TV.”

    2. the Internet becoming more accessible to help people save money

3.Recently, the internet is called as 'the information of sea.' As people said, I also agreed on the internet is very useful to search for an information. Because the internet has mass amonut of text, photo, etc. Especially, we can find economical information from website to save money. This article talked about website which devised by a mother for people who couldn't buy at local store.

    -------------------------------------
Erika Vitiene has developed a service called Grocery Dash, which customers can use to plan meals using her website, which uses sale items at local grocery stores.

The program, called Publix Curbside, will allow customers to order their groceries online and a personal shopper at the store will collect the items, ring them up and then deliver them to the customer in the parking lot, charging a $7.99 service fee.

It’s a great service for people who are willing to pay for the convenience of having the work done for them, in terms of the planning portion.
